THE WORK
The great hall of Vienna's Palace of Justice, seen from the foot of its ceremonial staircase. Daylight pours through the glass roof in long diagonal sheets, washing the arcades in rose, ochre and violet. At the top of the stairs, Justitia sits enthroned beneath the columned aedicule, small against the architecture built around her. Every baluster and lantern holds its own share of the morning.
THE INSPIRATION
Justice was given the most light-filled room in the city. You climb toward it step by step, under a ceiling made of sky — architecture as a promise that what happens here should be seen clearly.
