THE WORK
Two original studies of a restored Land Rover Defender 110, framed together as one piece. Above is the finished portrait. The olive-green body sits among warm boulders and Joshua trees with the roof rack loaded for the trip. Below is the same vehicle drawn as a working sketch. The watercolor thins into bare pencil and the machine seems caught halfway between blueprint and being.
THE INSPIRATION
Every restored machine holds two lives at once. There is the finished one that carries you into the desert and there is the ghost of the drawing it was rebuilt from.
